Level 7 — Advanced Topics: News, Idioms, and TOPIK Preparation
Level 7 is where Korean stops being a study project and becomes a real working language. We tackle news articles, opinion pieces, business Korean, and the cultural idioms that come up in adult conversation. The goal at this level is not to learn new grammar patterns — by Level 7, the grammatical scaffolding is already in place — but to broaden vocabulary into the abstract and idiomatic territory that separates intermediate from genuinely advanced learners.
A major component of this level is 사자성어 (four-character idioms), the chengyu-style idiomatic compounds inherited from classical Chinese. Korean adults use these regularly in writing and in semi-formal speech (대기만성, 일석이조, 동상이몽, 작심삼일). They are dense, allusive, and often impossible to parse from the individual characters alone, but they are also one of the markers that signal you have read enough Korean to function in adult contexts. We cover the fifty or so 사자성어 that come up most often in actual news and conversation.
Level 7 also serves as the preparation track for the TOPIK exam, especially TOPIK II (intermediate-advanced). We work through TOPIK question types, the vocabulary that appears most often in past papers, and the writing strategies that earn higher scores on the essay sections. Whether or not you plan to take the exam, TOPIK preparation is an excellent way to identify and close remaining gaps before you treat your Korean as 'done'.
By the end of this level you will:
- Read Korean news articles with full comprehension and minimal dictionary use
- Recognise and use the most common 사자성어 idiomatic expressions
- Handle workplace and business Korean in semi-formal contexts
- Prepare effectively for TOPIK II vocabulary, reading, and writing sections
